Faster is one of those films that has some nice ideas behind it but can’t quite put those ideas to good use. There is little doubt that it was made to grace the big screen but ended being relegated to direct to DVD status in many regions which probably tells you all you need to know about the film.
The plot follows a man simply known as the driver who has just been paroled from prison. Said driver is determined to avenge his brother’s death after the pair were double crossed in a heist some years ago. It’s up to a cop and an eccentric hitman to try and stop him before every person on his kill list winds up dead.
There is no doubting that Faster is an entertaining film, mainly due to its fast pace and plenty of action. Where it falls apart is with its story, or more specifically its climax. It is just far too predictable and you will undoubtedly see the so called twist coming a mile away. There are some nice touches though as the focus of the story jumps between the driver, the cop and the eccentric hitman which ensures the plot never becomes boring, it’s just unfortunate about the poorly disguised ending. The Rock is solid in the lead role and Billy Bob Thornton is his usual creepy self as the cop and the effects are solid throughout. In fact everything about this film is solid bar the most important thing, the third act.
